About Neck Lift Surgery

Are you tired of wearing scarves or turtlenecks even in warm weather to conceal the loose flaps of skin on your neck? Beverly Hills, CA plastic surgeon Suzanne A. Trott, M.D, F.A.C.S. performs neck lift surgery to correct the look of an aging neckline. This facial surgery tightens the area under your chin and along the neck to remove the loose skin that creates a "turkey neck" or "double chin." By taking away the loose skin and fat while incorporating a tightening technique to produce a smoother, natural neckline, this lower facial surgery at Suzanne A. Trott, M.D., F.A.C.S. can provide significant improvements to the lower half of your face.

Ideal Candidates

Men and women hoping to undergo neck lift treatment generally battle visibly loose skin along the neckline. Neck skin that hangs is usually caused by numerous factors including gravity, weight fluctuations, and aging. Whatever the reason may be, hanging neck skin causes an unbecoming look, which generally can only be addressed with skin excision and a tightening technique.

A neck lift will also take care of the "waddle" that some of us have genetically. We often hear our Beverly Hills patients say: "My mother has this. Everyone in my family has this. I've had it my whole life" as they grab at the bulge under their chin. This "turkey gobble" is usually caused by fat deep underneath the platysma muscle. This is fat that cannot be liposuctioned, but must be removed surgically very carefully by a skilled board-certified plastic surgeon. This is part of the neck lift procedure. If there is more superficial fat (subcutaneous) along the jawline, then that can be liposuctioned as well to give more definition.

Surgical Technique

Your neck lift surgery can be done in the comfort of our office under local anesthesia; no need to go to an operating room and have general anesthesia. The procedure is done with just an incision hidden underneath your chin, and sometimes with additional small incisions behind your ears. If isolated areas of fat exist, liposuction of the neck would be completed first. Next, any sagging or hanging skin will be trimmed away and the underlying tissue and remaining skin will be pulled tight. This tightening method is conducted until the desired contour, shape, and smoothness has been achieved. Even though sutures are used to close the incision, scars should not be visibly seen since they are located in inconspicuous areas. A nonsurgical fat reduction injection such as Kybella may be incorporated to complement the results. Furthermore, other nonsurgical alternatives can help the skin's surface, such as laser treatment or a peel, to produce a vibrantly glowing appearance.

What to Expect

After neck lift surgery, there will most likely be some swelling, bruising, and discomfort, but these will go away around 7 – 10 days. It's important to rest and eliminate high-impact activity for several weeks to assist in the healing period. While recovering, clothing should not touch the neck area. You should notice visible outcomes almost immediately. In addition, it has been stated that the neck lift surgery can make one of the most significant improvements to a individual's profile, taking a decade off your appearance.
