About Orbera

Double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Suzanne A. Trott is proud to offer Beverly Hills men and women a unique way to lose weight. Orbera is a new method to help assist with weight loss that is considered minimally invasive compared to other bariatric treatments. This two-part weight loss technique is designed to help patients lose weight slowly and maintain weight loss through a healthy lifestyle after treatment. The Orbera balloon is a soft, expandable silicone intragastric device that is temporarily placed inside the stomach. Once in position, it is filled with a safe saline solution, which essentially helps patients feel fuller faster when eating. Studies have shown that this device has proven to help patients lose 3x the amount of weight they would with diet and exercise alone. Dr. Trott will provide a full assessment and discuss your lifestyle and weight loss goals. For patients who have struggled to lose weight through traditional methods, long-lasting weight loss and overall health can be more achievable with the Orbera gastric balloon technology.

IDeal Candidates

Men and women who understand the principles of a healthy diet and live a healthy lifestyle so they can adhere to it after this treatment may be candidates for this procedure. Most patients who receive the Orbera device desire to lose additional weight but have found it hard to achieve with diet alone. In addition, they are looking for a less invasive weight loss approach other than the traditional gastric weight loss surgeries. This method may not be the best solution for patients who are considered very obese.

Procedure Technique

Once you have your consultation and meet with Dr. Trott to discuss weight loss goals, a personalized and comprehensive program will be designed for you, which will include the Orbera balloon among other protocols after treatment.

During the procedure, the deflated Orbera balloon is inserted through the mouth, eliminating the need for incisions. After the balloon is inserted through the esophagus and properly position into the stomach, it is then filled with a safe saline solution. Once the balloon is filled, it resembles the size of a grapefruit and can move freely within the stomach. The goal is that with less room in the stomach, patients will begin to become accustomed to eating smaller portions, which slowly begins the weight loss aspect. In the first few days after the balloon is placed, patients may experience nausea or vomiting. This eventually subsides once the body adjusts to the device.

The Orbera balloon stays in place for about six months. Most patients lose the majority of their weight in the first few months. Once the device is removed, it is important that patients adhere to a healthy lifestyle so they can maintain their weight loss after this treatment.

Frequently asked questions

  • Will I be awake during the placement of the Orbera balloon?

All patients will be sedated for the entire gastric balloon placement procedure. The balloon is inserted through the mouth, and although there are no incisions, anesthesia is used since the device moves through the mouth, throat, and esophagus.

  • How long does the Orbera balloon stay in my stomach?

The Orbera gastric balloon stays in the stomach for six months.

  • How long does the procedure take?

The placement of the Orbera balloon device (as well as the removal once treatment has been completed) each takes about fifteen minutes. Patients are sedated for a very short period of time during the insertion and removal process.

  • Is Obera an in-office procedure?

No, Obera is not an in-office procedure. This procedure will be done at a medical facility.

  • Is the procedure covered by insurance?

Unfortunately, no, most insurance companies do not cover gastric balloon placement procedures.

  • Can the Orbera balloon be placed at the same time as a cosmetic surgery procedure?

Yes, this device can be placed during almost any breast, body, or facial procedure.

  • I was told I was not overweight enough to qualify for bariatric surgery. Could I still qualify for Orbera gastric balloon placement?

Yes, patients with a BMI between 30 and 40 are usually good candidates for this treatment. Most of our patients who desire to lose weight with the help of a gastric procedure usually consider Orbera if they are not registered as obese. Patients with a much higher BMI may be considered for a different bariatric surgery.
