About Mommy Makeovers

The miracle of life usually comes with a hefty physical toll on the mother's body. After pregnancy and childbirth, women may find many changes to their body that they are unable to fix with a healthy diet and exercise, including stretch marks, sagging or smaller breasts, stubborn pockets of fat, loose stomach muscles, and excess skin throughout the body. A Mommy Makeover is a combination of lifting and contouring procedures for a woman who wants to restore her body back after pregnancy and childbirth. It most commonly refers to the combination of either a breast augmentation (augmentation mammaplasty) with or without a lift (mastopexy) and a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) with liposuction (liposculpture) of the flanks (lower back). At Suzanne A. Trott, MD, FACS in Beverly Hills, CA, every mother will have a private consultation with double board-certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Suzanne Trott to discuss their needs, concerns, and goals. Dr. Trott can then create a customized Mommy Makeover of surgical and nonsurgical procedures to restore her body and renew her confidence.

Best Candidates

The best candidates for a mommy makeover are women in good health who need assistance restoring their body after pregnancy and childbirth. A mommy makeover is best for women who have used a healthy diet and exercise to naturally restore their body, but there are still stubborn pockets of fat, loose skin, or other concerns that cannot be altered naturally. It is recommended that candidates seeking a mommy makeover not be planning any more pregnancies, as additional pregnancies will alter the work of this procedure. If you do get pregnant after your mommy makeover, a few touch up surgeries are usually needed to restore your results.

What to Expect

Prior to the procedure, you will meet with your surgeon to discuss which procedures will be part of their mommy makeover treatment plan. Since a mommy makeover incorporates a number of different procedures, each patient’s surgical experience will be different. Most mommy makeover surgeries will be performed in an accredited surgical facility or hospital with the patient under general anesthesia. The length of the surgery varies based on the number and types of procedures performed at one time. Because of the invasiveness of certain procedures, some patients will be required to stay overnight following surgery. Recovery time for this procedure is extensive and can take up to 6 – 9 moths for full recovery. However, most patients can go back to their normal routines after roughly the first month. Exercise should be avoided for 2 months post-surgery or when your surgeon gives approval. After surgery, you will slowly begin to see your transformed body as the swelling subsides.

Other Considerations

Scarring is a natural part of any surgery and should be expected. It is important that patients consider a board-certified cosmetic surgeon for this procedure, as they will have the knowledge and skill to minimize scarring and make incisions where they will be less noticeable. After fully recovering, scarring should be minimal and in most areas, hardly noticeable. Patients should not let this deter them from a mommy makeover, as the benefits of this procedure outweigh the scarring.
