About En Bloc Implant Removal

Removing your breast implants is a personal choice, and it can be done in several different ways. The least invasive way is to simply make a small incision and remove the implants. This can be done under local anesthesia and is a very short procedure. However, if you desire to have the capsules (scar tissue) removed, this can be done with what's called an "en bloc" (in-one-piece) resection.

Dr. Suzanne Trott in Beverly Hills, CA regularly meets with women who wish to have their breast implants removed via en bloc. Sometimes, a breast lift is needed following implant removal based upon the size and type of the implants and how much your skin was stretched. A lift can often help remove sagging or excess skin, which can remain after implant removal. If you wish to have your breast implants removed for whatever reason, contact Suzanne A. Trott, MD FACS to schedule your consultation.

Ideal Candidates

The best candidates for en bloc breast implant removal are those who want to have their entire capsule and implants removed in one piece without the pocket being entered. Some patients simply no longer wish to have enlarged breasts, some may be concerned with breast implant-related illness, and some may simply wish for a change. Whatever the reason, you are a candidate for breast removal if you are a healthy adult who wishes to have their implants removed via en bloc. During your first consultation, Dr. Trott will determine whether you are an ideal candidate and discuss your options for surgery.

Surgical Technique

During the breast implant removal procedure, the implants will be taken out and scar tissue might also have to be eliminated. Scar tissue is not uncommon after receiving implants and will need to be removed if it is affecting the form of your breast or causing discomfort. After the implants have been removed, Dr. Trott may perform a fat transfer, breast lift or both, depending on what was discussed during your consultation. Additionally, there are a number of choices to restore volume following an implant removal to enhance the shape of your breast.

What to Expect

An en bloc capsulectomy is performed under anesthesia and usually takes about 2 – 3 hours. In most cases, recovery for this procedure is one week. In some cases, drains need to be placed for about one week, after which the patient can resume regular activity.

The recovery period will vary for each individual, depending on the repair needed following the procedure. After the surgery, Dr. Trott will provide post-procedure directions and might recommend additional procedures if you have opted to re-augment your breast. For the first couple of weeks, patients will experience swelling and bruising and must restrict strenuous exercise until instructed otherwise. However, patients are encouraged to get up and gradually move around since it helps with blood circulation.
